Synopsis

Princess And Seven Kung Fu Masters (2013), directed by the prolific Wong Jing, is an earnest yet polarizing attempt to rekindle the spirit of classic Hong Kong martial arts comedy. Eschewing a deeply intricate narrative, the film heavily leans on its veteran ensemble cast – including Sammo Hung, Eric Tsang, and Sandra Ng – to inject life into its often slapstick proceedings. Hung, ever the titan of action choreography, despite the film's overall unevenness, still delivers his signature grounded fighting style, lending authenticity to the combat sequences. Tsang and Ng, masters of comedic timing, unleash boisterous performances that frequently embrace the exaggerated, 'mo lei tau' humor synonymous with a bygone era of Hong Kong cinema.

Cinematically, Wong Jing employs his characteristic rapid-fire pacing and often chaotic editing, a stylistic choice that, while occasionally feeling dated, also serves as a nostalgic callback to a specific period. While it may not achieve the narrative finesse of its predecessors, this film firmly positions itself within the tradition of irreverent Wuxia parody and martial arts comedy. It prioritizes boisterous entertainment and star power over intricate storytelling, offering a testament to the enduring appeal, and sometimes the inherent challenges, of recreating that unique blend of action and humor for a contemporary audience. It’s a film that celebrates its genre's tropes, even while exaggerating them for comedic effect.
